Life Safety, this MUST be working all the time, call us if it's beeping or just to check it

Smoke Detector Safety: What Every Homeowner Needs to Know

Smoke detectors are your home’s first line of defense against fire. When properly installed and maintained, they provide the early warning necessary to save lives.

Types of Smoke Detectors

Not all alarms are the same. For the best protection, your home should utilize both technologies:

  • Ionization Alarms: Most responsive to fast-flaming fires (like paper or grease fires).
  • Photoelectric Alarms: Best at detecting slow, smoldering fires (like smoke from furniture or wiring).
  • Dual-Sensor Alarms: Combine both technologies in one unit for maximum safety.

Key Safety Standards & Requirements

To ensure your family is protected, follow these critical guidelines:

  • Location Matters: Install smoke alarms in every bedroom, outside every sleeping area, and on every level of the home (including the basement).
  • Interconnection is Key: Modern codes require alarms to be interconnected. This means if one alarm detects smoke, every alarm in the house sounds, ensuring everyone is alerted regardless of where they are.
  • Hardwired vs. Battery: While battery-only units are common in older homes, hardwired units with a battery backup are the gold standard for reliability.

Maintenance Checklist

  • Test Monthly: Press the test button on every unit once a month.
  • Change Batteries Annually: A good rule of thumb is to change your batteries when you change your clocks for Daylight Saving Time.
  • The 10-Year Rule: Smoke detectors do not last forever. The sensors degrade over time. If your detectors are more than 10 years old, they must be replaced.

Carbon Monoxide (CO) Protection

In addition to smoke detectors, homes with gas appliances or attached garages should have Carbon Monoxide detectors. CO is a colorless, odorless "silent killer." We recommend installing combination Smoke/CO detectors to provide full-spectrum protection for your home.

Is Your Home Protected?

If your smoke detectors are chirping, outdated, or you aren’t sure if they are properly interconnected, don't wait for an emergency.

Contact us today for a safety inspection and professional installation of the latest fire and CO detection technology.
