Safety Tip

Electrical safety isn't a DIY project. If you find that your GFCIs aren't working correctly or you realize your older home isn't up to modern safety codes, always consult a licensed professional to ensure your family and property are protected.

What is a GFCI?

A GFCI (Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter) is a specialized electrical outlet designed to protect people from electrical shock. Unlike a standard circuit breaker that protects your home’s wiring from overheating, a GFCI monitors the flow of electricity. If it detects even a tiny "leak" of current—known as a ground fault—it shuts off the power instantly (in as little as 1/40th of a second) to prevent injury.

Where are GFCIs Required?

According to the National Electrical Code (NEC), GFCIs are mandatory in any area where electricity and water might come into contact. This includes:

  • Bathrooms: All receptacles.
  • Kitchens: Any outlet serving countertop surfaces.
  • Outdoor Areas: All exterior plugs.
  • Garages & Basements: Unfinished areas and workspaces.
  • Laundry Areas: Within 6 feet of sinks or tubs.

Signs You Need a GFCI Upgrade

If your home still has standard two or three-prong outlets in "wet" areas, you may be at risk. You should consider an upgrade if:

  1. You have older outlets near sinks, tubs, or outdoor areas that do not have "Test" and "Reset" buttons.
  2. Frequent Tripping: If your GFCI trips often, it could indicate a faulty appliance or a problem with the circuit itself.
  3. No Power: If an outlet isn't working, it may simply be a tripped GFCI elsewhere on the circuit that needs a professional reset or replacement.
